READ: Psalm 137, Malachi 2, Matthew 19, Hebrews 1

“But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.” (Malachi 2:15)

There is nothing as radiant as a woman who knows that the one to whom she has covenanted cherishes and adores her. There is nothing as comforting to a man than to know he is the unique pride of his bride. Unadulterated faithfulness between spouses is one of the most life-giving forces on earth, even as it is increasingly rare. Pure marriage is one of the best representations we have of God’s love for us. Marriage is sacred, for it is intended to reveal God’s heart to humankind and to empower spiritual procreation.

God brings a man and a woman into mutual giving of themselves in order to provide the best context for the raising up of spiritual giants. The brokenness of humanity does not limit God in His greatness; humanity’s brokenness cannot deny God’s favored means. When a man and a woman are faithful to each other and to Jesus, this is the breeding ground of the saints. It is not injurious to the principle to apply it to spiritual children. A godly marriage is the most powerful of a frontier missionary’s weapons. When a man and a woman are selflessly devoted to each other under the Lordship and blessings of Christ, they are a formidable force in the spirit realm. Godly marriage does more to penetrate the darkness of unreached peoples than is acknowledged. Which explains why marriage is increasingly under attack.

Spiritual warfare is more often experienced in the privacy of the home than in the marketplace or the night visions. Satan, crafty as he is, knows that all mission and ministry can be undermined if the marriage is broken. Sexual sin is but the visible fruit of hidden disease, and sexual faithfulness is but the minimum of our covenant promise. A darkness-devouring marriage does not hide behind the pretense of avoiding the maximum sins (Matt. 19:1-9). A darkness-devouring marriage is only that which is full of joy, life, truth, honesty, trust, and mutual cherishing. God’s word to those whose marriage began and would continue with His endorsement is: “Take heed to your spirit and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth” (Mal. 2:15). Godly offspring, disciples from every tribe, tongue, people, and nation depend more on heavenly marriages than they do on strategy, language learning, courage, and miracle. The real miracle is marriages that soar above all the slings and arrows of the outrageous devil. Which means that Church planting is primarily done at home.
